Quick Overview
Caylan is a CompTIA A+ Certified IT Support Technician. He is currently seeking part-time hybrid-location jobs that can work around his academic schedule. Caylan currently studies trumpet performance with Professor Terry Everson at Boston University's College of Fine Arts. He also works closely with Professors Don Lucas and Steven Weigt, studying brass chamber performance and composition respectively. Caylan is the Graduate Assistant for the Jazz Band at BU, and in this role he provides logistical and librarian support, and he leads rehearsal sessions when needed by Professor Aaron Goldberg.
A Passionate Technician
Caylan has been fascinated by electronics and computing technology since he was in preschool. Ever since some mischief at daycare involving CRT displays and magnets, Caylan's parents encouraged him and helped him to disassemble old toys and start learning how they worked at home. After a long stint in academia, earning degrees in Computer Science and Music Performance, Caylan recently came to the realization that his working life is meant to be in the IT field. Throughout his CS degree Caylan's favorite work centered on low-level or hardware problems, especially in the realm of computing security. He recently completed his CompTIA A+ certification, and on advancing in this career path he plans to pursue specializations in security.
Marching Brass Technician
Caylan became truly aware of his love for music while marching and playing trumpet in the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps. He spent the summers of 2016, 2017, and 2018 on DCI Tour, where he performed field shows to the best of his ability every day for three months continuously.
The fellowship Caylan found and the friendships he made cemented his life as one of music-making. The challenge to be better every day on tour carried into his life in the off-season, and continues to motivate his efforts today.
Caylan aged out of the Colts after the summer of 2018, but he continues his involvement with the organization by serving as a brass and visual technician for the Colt Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps.
Caylan's past teachers include David Cooper, Chad McCullough, Bruce Briney, John Cooper, Mary Caporal Prior, Nick Lane, Jim Baxter, and Paul Miller. He has had one-off lessons and masterclasses with John Aley, Al Hood, Michael Sachs, and David Bilger. His past drum corps trumpet technicians include Justin Diaz, David Torres, Scott Whitford, Ziggy Garcia, Ryan Adamsons, and Michael Miller. Caylan credits his teachers with building his love and appreciation for all music, and for instilling in him the perspective that all challenges, musical or otherwise, are opportunities for growth.

Composer and Arranger
Composer
As a composer Caylan seeks to bring a metallic intensity to the worlds of jazz and classical music. Early on his music taste centered closely on Rock, Metal, and their subgenres. Though his tastes have diversified, Caylan loves to combine heavy rhythms, soaring melodies, and bombastic arrivals with the Minimalism and Neo-Tonality that first drew him to composing.

Arranger
Caylan is also an avid arranger. The bulk of his arrangements are for small brass ensembles and jazz combos, but he always strives to broaden his writing ability. Caylan has arranged his favorite metal songs, works of various classical composers, and eclectic modern jazz for both classical and jazz ensembles.

Current Writing
The focus of Caylan's writing at present is to deepen his portfolio of polished, original works for brass chamber groups. One of these, The Green Star, is teased on this site. The material of these pieces ranges from tender ballads to esoteric vigor, and sometimes derails to intentionally goofy nonsense. Caylan hopes to begin submitting materials for publishing and competition in late 2023.

Mead!
Caylan has been brewing mead independently since late in his undergrad, when a housemate urged him to help make a batch of mead, when no one in the house had any experience brewing. Caylan collected a few articles on mead-brewing and procured the ingredients, while his housemate improvised an airlock on a 5-gallon bucket, using only acrylic tubing, hot-melt glue, and a clean Tostitos queso jar! Luckily the very first attempt came back delicious and Caylan has modeled the proportions of that time ever since. He always strives to keep his meads accessible, and no matter the additives or dryness, his mead retains its characteristic sweetness!
Photography
Just before Caylan's move to Boston he stumbled on two very well preserved Konica Minolta cameras at an antique shop in Sturgeon Bay WI. He brought the largest of these vintage cameras to Boston with him, and uses it to dabble in vintage photography. Caylan tends to alternate between high-speed/high-quality films and more niche and potentially fragile media, and experiments with light and color palettes as they are rendered on these varieties of film. Contact Caylan for booking at [email protected]. Costs for booking are directly related to the expenses of the vintage process and the value of labor. See the Photo Portfolio page of this site for examples of Caylan's photography.
